Research

We focus on developing smart support systems for individuals in need, particularly older adults, people with hearing and visual impairments, and those experiencing bullying.

From sensing to care

Support requires a chain from safe sensing to accountable action.

  1. SenseNon-contact sensors, wearables, audio, video and logs
  2. UnderstandActivity, emotion, health state, context
  3. ReasonMemory, knowledge, LLM agents, risk assessment
  4. ActAlerts, guidance, robot assistance, human handoff
  5. GovernPrivacy, consent, fairness, clinical and safety review
  • The research challenge is not one algorithm; it is the reliability of the whole support loop in real life.
  • Sensing and inference stay on the device where possible, the cloud holds memory and learning, and people stay in control.
  • Real-world agentic AI can augment, not replace, human care.

Direction 01 / 05

Elderly support

  • Dignity and Empowerment
  • Care and Comfort

Anomaly and fall detection for older adults living alone

A millimetre-wave radar system recognises everyday activities and detects falls, without a camera in the home.

  • 10 everyday activities recognised
  • 96.48% accuracy with multi-scale density-based denoising
  • < 50 ms to detect a fall

Bathroom safety without cameras

A practical activity-recognition pipeline for bathroom-like rooms: radar point clouds, DBSCAN and KDE denoising, temporal modelling, and an alert for review.

  • 6 bathroom actions told apart
  • 96.1% accuracy in one study

Vital signs after an incident

Can the same radar follow heart-related signals without touching the body? In a pilot the median heart-rate error was about 6.8 bpm, and heart-rate variability cannot yet be recovered reliably. We report this openly and keep working on it.

Medication management and an empathetic, personalised pillbox

Reminders and support that adapt to the person, not only to the schedule.

Direction 02 / 05

Assistive communication & accessibility

  • Dignity and Empowerment
  • Empathy and Connection

Gesture‑based communication for people with hearing impairments

Non-contact millimetre-wave sensing, boundary extraction and a Bi-LSTM with attention turn gestures into text.

  • 15 gestures recognised
  • 91.7% accuracy in one study

Guidance robots for white‑cane and walking‑stick users

Service robots that recognise white-cane and walking-stick users and guide them in hospitals and large shops.

Direction 03 / 05

Child & student safety

  • Safety and Resilience
  • Protection and Fairness

A child left in a car

60 GHz FMCW radar for in-cabin sensing: detecting a child left in a vehicle, an urgent, time-critical scenario.

Bullying detection and prediction

Abusive-language recognition from speech, violence detection from activity, and emotional-state analysis, combined into a risk estimate for early intervention.

Detecting fights in schools and public spaces

Millimetre-wave radar and audio recognise fighting behaviour so that people can step in early.

The aim is not constant surveillance. The aim is context-sensitive protection, minimal necessary sensing, human oversight, and clear accountability.

Direction 04 / 05

Health & care training

  • Empathy and Connection
  • Care and Comfort

AI‑enhanced Traditional Chinese Medicine

The four examinations — inspection, listening and smelling, inquiry, palpation — supported by tongue and pulse analysis and by diagnosis agents that use retrieval-augmented generation.

Psychotherapy education simulation

Simulated sessions that help students practise therapeutic conversation.

Direction 05 / 05

Spatial intelligence & robotics

  • Care and Comfort
  • Safety and Resilience

Scene graphs and digital twins of the home

A model of objects, their relations, and what they afford, so a robot can reason about a real home.

Find my medicine and bring it safely

An augmented scene graph of the home, LLM planning grounded in that model, and a robot that asks for help when it is uncertain.

Indoor navigation for an elderly‑assistance robot

Recognising indoor environments and planning safe paths through them.

Also in the lab

  • Driver health and fatigue monitoring
  • In-vehicle comfort and safety monitoring
  • AI agent systems
